The City of Austin extends its free outdoor wi-fi network from downtown to east Austin. The city first set up the free network in downtown Austin in advance of the World Congress on Information Technology in 2006. “At the time, we believed it was the largest outdoor wireless mesh in existence,” said Mayor Will Wynn. “When we turned on that outdoor mesh, we talked about growing it to other parts of the community. So now, this great part of town will now have free internet access available to all citizens.”

It's taken about four years for the surrounding neighbors – the Organization of Central East Austin Neighborhoods and East Cesar Chavez Neighborhood Planning Team, along with the Downtown Austin Alliance, the East 6th Street Community Association, and Keep Austin Beautiful – to come up with a solution that will take this barrier between East Austin and Downtown and make it as hospitable as it can be for pedestrian traffic.

Magazine: Austin one of best places to live Austin Business Journal  3/16/2007

Austin ranks as one of the top five places to "embrace urban life," according to a list of the 50 best places to live in April's Men's Journal magazine.
"It's easier to understand downtown Austin after you realize there are always two versions of the city jostling for position," the magazine says. "The older version is the friendly, funky college town that's long been a counter-cultural capital (think Matthew McConaughey). Then there's the newer, glossier version full of high-energy overachievers (Lance Armstrong). The good news is that this cultural clash has created a vibrant setting alongside the banks of Town Lake."

It’ll stop at Plaza Saltillo on Comal Street in East Austin, then at MLK Boulevard, Highland Mall, North Lamar, Burnet Road at Braker Lane, Howard Lane and then Lakeline Boulevard before hitting Leander in Williamson County.

Preserving a Honky-Tonk Culture While Attracting New Buyers  NY Times 12/10/2006

"While much of the rest of the nation is facing a weakened market, East Austin is in the midst of a boom so explosive that median home prices have jumped 48 percent in the last year. New condo projects, a dozen of which are now in the works, routinely sell out during the preconstruction phase."

"Professional BMX racer Jason Carnes one of the early buyers in the Pedernales
lofts, is selling his condo in the project that brought hip urban living to East
Austin. "I'm movin' on up, just like the Jeffersons," said Carnes, who is moving to Sixth & Brushy, condos being built a block off Interstate 35."

"It's a little more than I can afford, but I'm just going to do it anyway and live it up while I'm here," said Carnes, who paid $314,000 for his new condo, which will be a little bigger than his previous unit and has downtown views. Carnes said he sold his Pedernales unit for $228,000 — a $36,000 profit, but it's nothing compared with what his Southern California racing buddies are making on real estate. "I see those guys making a killing out there, but I guess $36,000 isn't bad," he said.
